How to Tag Pets in the Photos App on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Whether you’re a dog mom or a cat dad, you like your pets in the Photos app and undoubtedly take countless pets in the Photos app of them. Using the newly implemented pet identification function in iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, you can now view your pet’s photographs in the People & Pets album of the photographs app. You may also manually tag pets to add unidentified images of your pet. Photo Album for People and Pets

With iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, Apple added the People & Pets album to pets in the Photos app, replacing the previous People album. This upgrade allows you to view images and videos of your cat or dog in the album alongside your friends and family.

Apple Photos should automatically recognize pets in the Photos app and add them to the People & Pets album. This allows you to simply enter the name of your pet. Moving future, Photos will identify the named pet in the same way that you would name (tag) people in Photos.

You may then launch the People & Pets app to see your furry companions in both existing and new pets in the Photos app and videos that you have captured.

Tips for Finding Pets in the Photos app on iPhone using iOS 17 

Although images will discover images of your pet for you, you may also find them yourself. This is useful in the early stages of the recognition process, when pets in the Photos app may not recognize all of the images for the People & Pets album.

Here are some ideas for utilizing the Photos Search function to discover your pet’s photos:

  • Search for a certain type of pet, cat, or dog, and then use the recommendations to filter down the photographs.
  • To find photos of your pet, use the keywords you put in the descriptions.
  • To discover pet images, use additional keywords such as date, location, season, or genre.

On iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, you may tag cats and dogs in Photos after finding them yourself or in the People & Pets album. The latter is perfect if Photos has spotted a pet and added them to the People & Pets album for you.

In a photograph or video

  • To identify a pet in a photo, open the image.
  • Tap the Info icon (i) or slide up from the bottom to see the information.
  • There should be a question mark next to the nameless face.
  • Tap the symbol and select Name This Pet.

  • Select a pet from the People & Pets album to name it.

How to Tag Pets in the Photos App on Mac 

In a photograph or video

  • To name a pet in a photo, choose View → Show Face Names from the menu bar.
  • Then, under the face, click the “unnamed” option and enter your name.
  • Alternatively, click the Info (i) button in the toolbar, followed by the plus symbol in the pop-up window. 
  • Drag the circle over the face in the photo and type the name into the “Click to name” section.

In the People & Pets album

To name a pet in the People & Pets album, click +Name on the pet’s photo and type the name.

Alternatively, choose the pet, then click Add Name at the top to input a name or select one from the possibilities. Click Next and Done when you finish.

How to manage the People and Pets album in Photos on iPhone

When you name your pet and Photos identifies new photos of them, they will appear in the People & Pets album automatically. This includes fresh photographs and videos that you take.

In the People & Pets album, you may still manage and execute further actions on pets in the Photos app of Fluffy or Fido.

  • Set a key photo: You may select the primary image for your pet’s album. Choose a photo of your pet and long-press or right-click to select Make Key Photo.
  • Merge photo groups: You may see that Photos adds a new pet to the album that is already titled. In this situation, you can combine the photo groupings.
    • On iPhone and iPad, click in the upper right corner, then tap each pet and select Merge at the bottom.
    • On Mac, hold Command while clicking each pet, then right-click and select Merge X Pets.
  • Fix mistaken pets: If you discover a photo of a pet in an album that was erroneously recognized, you may quickly rectify it. To delete a photo from the pet’s album, long-press or right-click it and choose This Is Not [pet name].
